    If you are okay with about $3000/month dividend before taxes then you can retire with $500k. Hopefully your capital will also grow 2 to 4% to keep up with inflation.

    Syed, are you assuming a 7.2% yield on your dividend portfolio? What are you holding to get that kind of yield?

    If you assume that $500K had a little time for dividend growth before retirement (say 5-10 years) you could be buying a portfolio today at say, 4%, and could achieve $3000/month after that growth period, though it may not be very diversified.

    Otherwise, you would probably have to split your portfolio equally between Somalian Pirate futures and directly held blood diamonds in off-shore accounts.
