For a great use of twitter, check out Scott Hanselman’s blog. He’s a software developer, tech evangelist and he has type I diabetes. He actually twittered one day in the life of a type I diabetic. Others are using twitter to keep in touch in an asynchronous conversation. It’s a method to engage in asynchronous conversations like “I’m reading this blog post” or “I’m at conference X and speaker Y said something cool” or “Does anyone know a good .Net library for securing apps?”.

The “giant chat room” analogy is a good one. But yes, not everyone needs one. It’s still very “Silicon Valley, always plugged in” type of tech.

I can sort of see its appeal to the younger crowd, but I don’t think anyone particularly cares about what I’m doing with my day… wake up, work, make dinner, play with kid, surf online, sleep… rinse/repeatx7

Honestly, Twitter is a way in which tech nerds (at least now) are really keeping “plugged in”. At a small level it can be a collaboration tool, on a macro level it’s like a feed of “micro-information” like reading multiple Facebook status updates.

I’m a tech nerd, my job involves 15+ hours on Facebook every week, but I still can’t justify twitter (in concept at least).

So don’t feel bad if you don’t “get it” or if no one really listens in. It’s still one of those growing technologies (like wikis) where the concept is so simple, but the possible uses are bigger than we’ve really figured out yet.
