I've done this before. I was tired of not getting coupons for things I use, so I wrote the companies (email) and told them how much I liked them and how my family benefitted from their products. I got a LOT of reponses. You can see my original post about it here: http://mrsnespysworld.blogspot.com/2009/09/wfmw-high-value-coupons.html.

And just two days ago I wrote P&G and told them that we had a faulty bottle of dish washing liquid that surely wasn't their intended product because using it was nearly impossible (it had crystallized inside the bottle and would clog up the nozzle for dispensing). They sent me an email telling me they had some product exposure to extremely low temps are sending me a coupon for a free one.

I will vouche for it...it works and it relaly doesn't take long to do (and an email costs nothing but 30 seconds).

She beats me when it comes to getting coupons. In the US they have stores that have convenient money back programs.

All she did was keep a stash of a lot of coupons for some things.

I didn't see her buy potatoes, fresh fruit, or milk.

Very nice video. A lot harder to do here in Canada, but definitely possible. I tend to feel a bit shy when I have 6 coupons in one order because it slows down the line.

Thanks for the link!

A mom of 4 feeds her family for a few bucks. Not junk food - real groceries. Don't believe it? Take a look, watch the whole clip.

not sure my time and a $0.50+ (??) stamp is worth the $0.75 or $1.00 coupon i'll get 3-4 weeks later.

i think there are MANY other opportunities in my daily life to save more money then the ROI on this exercise...

I don't know if we have weird taste in food or what but I have never been able to save more than $1-2 (if even) per grocery bill. And trust me, I look. I look at flyers, manufacturer packaging, the pads of coupons at various locations in the supermarket. I just signed up on Steve Z.'s website so maybe I'll have more luck from there!

It is true coupons can save you a lot of money. I'm a big coupon clipper myself and over the years if I were to track all the savings I think many would be surprised.

One of my favorite coupon types are the buy one entree and get the second one free. Followed by cereal because it is such a necessity. I moved over from downunder and I’m still surprised at the cost of the basic essential.

If I had a legit beef with the product or company I might write to them via email, but not to just ask for a coupon

So how do you know the coupons are going to be worth more than regular coupons you can get anywhere?

A friend of mine used to work in the customer service call centre for a paper products company. She dealt with customer complaints. While she couldn't refund a customer's purchase, she could send coupons. And she did that an awful lot.
Some of the complaints were hilarious. My favourite was customers complaining that facial tissue plugged toilets when used instead of toilet tissue. :-)

This is useful information to know. While I personally have no interest in such a low return activity, I'm sure there are a some people who are short on cash and have the time to do this sort of thing.

Or they are like Steve and just enjoy doing it. :)

My wife is really into natural foods and because of this we can't buy many packaged products at all that meet her criteria. For a while we were eating Amy's frozen pizzas because they had mostly natural healthy ingredients. I took the time to write them and tell them how much we enjoyed their pizza and were regular customers but we found their products to be so expensive when compared to the competition, not to mention the smaller size. Think $10+ for a 400g pizza when not on sale.

I politely asked if they could send us some coupons so we could continue buying their products at a reduced price. I can't remember exactly what coupons we received but I think we received at least 4 coupons for free frozen pizza, several coupons for $2 or $3 off frozen pizzas, and a smattering of coupons for their other products as well. There must have been at least 20 high value coupons, including several FPCs (free product coupons).

This is definitely a good strategy for getting coupons. I wouldn't suggest taking advantage of these companies by writing them non-stop. I'm sure some/most of the companies track addresses and wouldn't send coupons to you repeatedly anyway. However, if you are a loyal customer to a brand and you know you buy it regularly, sending off a quick email telling them how much you love their product, how you use it, and asking for a few coupons is a good idea for sure.

Many people view a lot of the best ways to save money as being beneath them or utterly cheap so I expect a lot of these responses from almost every post by this guest blogger. To each their own. I'll suck up my pride and take the extra $5 or $10 in my pocket :)

Again, I only do these kinds of things when I have extra time. Spending too much time on this kind of thing when you can easily make more valuable use of your time doesn't make sense. If you enjoy doing it and have the extra time, then go nuts!

That is a great project, "The power of the pen"!

It brings good customer satisfaction getting results and a letter back from the company.

Your friends must've been impressed with all the bags of chips you acquired.

Great article Steven. I actually did this as part of a grade 9 project. I wrote a letter to Hostess Potato Chips regarding how dissappointed I was in a particular product. I ended up receiving a few coupons for free bags of chips. At the time, it was like receiving a big pay day. :)

Maybe I'm just a bit stuck up, but this seems to cross the line between frugal and cheap. If the price of a box of cereal is too steep, then I suppose this may be a glorious oppertunity to save the 5 dollars, but for me, taking the time to write a letter to the company for the shot of maybe getting a coupon for a free box of cereal is not going to happen. . .maybe I'm a snob, but I feel that would cross the line between smart consumer and kinda tacky/cheap.
