Bank of Canada is again ahead of the US Fed in recognizing the risks of a major recession or depression are much larger than inflation with plummeting fuel prices. It’s probably too late even in the US to effect a major rebound via interest rates but it certainly would not have hurt.

Hello all, first of all MDJ thanks for the post it is very helpful. But since you touched the issue I would like to share my knowledge on the subject. I’m occupied in financial industry related field and there are simple security processes available in order to prevent scam. For instance if we are talking about your personal information and CRA they have CRA Epass services. It’s an online service and if CRA will need your information to be updated they probably will ask to go to the service. The other thing is that none of banks and CRA as well will not ask you for personal info update trough the letter. They will do it with Notice of Assessment. It’s a good rule if you are not certain about letter origin simply go to CRA website take publically available phone number and call them for clarifications.

The CRA scam may work because in audits CRA actually make you produce your returns (subject to a future post…) so although it sounds crazy that CRA may not have your personal information, they sometimes actually don’t (which means the scammers know something about the day to day practices of CRA not to mention its a pretty good copy of government letterhead… scary stuff).

That snail mail scam might have worked on me if I hadn’t read about it in your post. This takes some real imagination. If these scammers put some effort into a legitimate venture, they’d probably do well.
