used tires – I think you are referring to the iPad, not the iPod/iPhone. I think that Apple will improve it in future generations eventually making it more like a tablet computer. Perhaps it would involve cloud computing, but I think it is overpriced for what it does. OTOH, if I’m an Apple stockholder I’d be pleased.

It has really helped me with trading my stocks (opportunity cost) and taking advantage of the market.

I don’t have an iPhone, just an iTouch, but hope to get the iPhone in June. I know that the data charges can be very expensive (adding another $20 to the plan) but I think the convenience is worth it.

Oh ya and my favourite free money saving aps are:

Skype (although I cannot make calls only text messages)
CAA – Lets you know where you can get discounts using the location finder
AppBox Lite – 12 apps in one including a tip calculator
Craigsphone – Craigslist for your iPod to find some good deals
Kijiji – Also to find good deals
eBay – Did I mention to find some good deals (or hard to find items)
CardStar – Never forget your club cards at home again (I got Safeway / Airmiles / Areoplan / Shoppers Drug Mart and a bunch more to collect all those points and keep my wallet small.

Skype – for 30 dollars a year I can call unlimited to anywhere in Canada & the states. Even when travellling I just need to find a wifi spot and with wifi at home I never pay long distance for calling family and friends.

Kayak.com and more importantly priceline.com both have iphone apps and they saved my girlfriend and I hundreds of dollars (and time) on booking hotel rooms during our last road trip to California.

Since getting my first iPod touch (pretty much at the time when the App Store opened), I’ve been getting a rather large number of apps. Some paid, some free. I end up not really using more than “two pages worth” (at 16 per page) on a regular basis. Can’t say that I have a recommendation for a free one available in Canada but there are some which are specific to Montreal that I find useful, like STM Mobile (public transit schedule), Guichetier (ATMs), Île-sans-fil (free WiFi), and Bixi (shared bicycles). Can’t say they really “save me money” but they’re worth listing.

True pay as you go, minutes don’t expire (well, they do after one year, and only if you don’t buy any minutes within that year, otherwise all your minutes roll over everytime you purchase new time).

Dead cheap. Less than 5 bucks a month for me.

I call myself frugal and I have one. I can understand the sentiment though I boycotted cell phones for years. The iPhone, however, amazes me everyday with new ways to save money. I keep thinking of all the devices I bought that cost more and did a fraction of what the iPhone can

The best money saving apps by far are apps that do SMS for free and VoIP. No need for voice and sms bills, unless of course you signed a 3 year

The opportunity cost alone of being able to trade stocks on 3G has already paid off my iPhone. Not to mention all the devices I’ll never have to buy again

The GroceryDeals is kind of weak for Manitoba (so is the groceryalerts.ca web site), only shows deals for Sobeys. What about other major grocery stores like Superstore, IGA, Safeway, Costco? Good idea, though.

I use Yelp (helps locate good food for cheap (and other stuff)) and Trapster (saves me money by helping avoid traffic tickets hahah).

The iPhone/Touch are great but I also wanted to warn people about about a bit of an issue with using Apple Gift Cards in the iTunes store in Canada. The issue is that you can not use gift cards to purchase apps (!).

You are correct most of these work on the iTouch. That is what my wife has. Poor me does not even have a phone!

Do those apps work in Canada?

The plans are expensive and I can’t justify that cost. I am going to be showing in the future how my home phone bill with long distance is less than 10 dollars Canadian a month!

Priceless

While the 3 year contract is unfortunate, as someone always on the go it is nice to not have to pay a monthly home internet bill, or have to worry about a land line bill. When you subtract these $50 off your monthly expenses, the marginal costs of an iPhone aren’t that bad.

Also use “Fixter” it’s an app for movies, lists all the movie theaters around me by distance, shows movie start times and allows me to buy tickets through it…..
