Thanks for some of the tips for apps. I only have an iPod touch and as a long time believer that Apple had a great business model by selling overpriced, overhyped, proprietary goods, I love the iPod touch.

used tires - I think you are referring to the iPad, not the iPod/iPhone. I think that Apple will improve it in future generations eventually making it more like a tablet computer. Perhaps it would involve cloud computing, but I think it is overpriced for what it does. OTOH, if I'm an Apple stockholder I'd be pleased.

You've got to compare it to a Netbook. Its the closest specs and they are releasing touch screen models now. Unfortuantly I think apples blew it and made it more like a Kindle then a netbook. I think they probably figured they couldn't actually make a functioning netbook or they would loose to many macbook pro sales. On the PC side I dumped my laptop as soon as I got my netbook. It was just too much lighter, smaller, bigger battery, and good for picking up chicks then my old 15 inch laptop. :)

Till then,

I like the Bloomberg app.

It has really helped me with trading my stocks (opportunity cost) and taking advantage of the market.

I don't have an iPhone, just an iTouch, but hope to get the iPhone in June. I know that the data charges can be very expensive (adding another $20 to the plan) but I think the convenience is worth it.

I don't know if it's free, but there is another app called Expense App. I think that's the name. THe application will allow you to take pictures of receipts and categorize your spending. This could come in handy at tax time when looking for deductions. :)

These are some great apps having used some of them and it's amazing they can make all this work without Flash. I use my iPhone to browse the 'net a lot. Never in the past 2 years have I felt as though it was crippled by not having flash. The only amount that I feel crippled is that i bought an original gen 1 iPhone that has the slow Edge network. If I was on the new iPhone 3GS, the 3G speeds are pretty darn fast.

I have my iPod touch and a cell phone with a corporate rate of $30/mth inclusive of fees etc. While I do not like carrying around two devices I cannot justify the cost or monthly expense of an iPhone and the iPod touch does everything the iPhone does with a few exceptions. When I need to replace my phone, I found out that you can purchase an iPhone (locked / unlocked) without a contract and just buy a SIM card. This way you can have the benefit of only carrying around one device and choose your own plan (NO data required too). Since I am with Bell I can buy a SIM card for $5 and keep my $30/mth plan and just use the Free Wi-Fi and built in GPS.

Oh ya and my favourite free money saving aps are:

Skype (although I cannot make calls only text messages)
CAA - Lets you know where you can get discounts using the location finder
AppBox Lite - 12 apps in one including a tip calculator
Craigsphone - Craigslist for your iPod to find some good deals
Kijiji - Also to find good deals
eBay - Did I mention to find some good deals (or hard to find items)
CardStar - Never forget your club cards at home again (I got Safeway / Airmiles / Areoplan / Shoppers Drug Mart and a bunch more to collect all those points and keep my wallet small.

Three major money saving apps I use regularly have easily saved me much more than the cost of owning an iphone.

Skype - for 30 dollars a year I can call unlimited to anywhere in Canada & the states. Even when travellling I just need to find a wifi spot and with wifi at home I never pay long distance for calling family and friends.

Kayak.com and more importantly priceline.com both have iphone apps and they saved my girlfriend and I hundreds of dollars (and time) on booking hotel rooms during our last road trip to California.

@Hamilton_9: Thanks for the ping!
I haven't followed the gift card issue that closely, but the blogposts I wrote in early 2009 occasionally get replies. The bottomline is that we don't really know the logic behind this and it seems unlikely that the situation will change any time soon, despite rumours that they would.
Prepaid credit cards do work, sometimes with a bit of tweaking (you need to have the exact same address on your Apple/iTunes account).

Since getting my first iPod touch (pretty much at the time when the App Store opened), I've been getting a rather large number of apps. Some paid, some free. I end up not really using more than "two pages worth" (at 16 per page) on a regular basis. Can't say that I have a recommendation for a free one available in Canada but there are some which are specific to Montreal that I find useful, like STM Mobile (public transit schedule), Guichetier (ATMs), Île-sans-fil (free WiFi), and Bixi (shared bicycles). Can't say they really "save me money" but they're worth listing.

Sergei,

Thanks for your feedback.

We know Manitobans love to save money (I am originally from Northern Ontario). We are looking for an editor to post the best deals because those stores are a lot different.

We do have many printable grocery coupons for that region though.

Let me know if you would like to apply for the position.

Thanks!

If you only want a phone and rarely use it, then 7/11's Speakout Wireless is the way to go.

True pay as you go, minutes don't expire (well, they do after one year, and only if you don't buy any minutes within that year, otherwise all your minutes roll over everytime you purchase new time).

Dead cheap. Less than 5 bucks a month for me.

"I think the best way to save money with the iPhone is to not buy it. It is way overpriced and costs way too much each month. No one who calls themselves “frugal” will has one."

I call myself frugal and I have one. I can understand the sentiment though I boycotted cell phones for years. The iPhone, however, amazes me everyday with new ways to save money. I keep thinking of all the devices I bought that cost more and did a fraction of what the iPhone can

I bought mine used (new in package) off Craigslist and have a $30 per month plan

The best money saving apps by far are apps that do SMS for free and VoIP. No need for voice and sms bills, unless of course you signed a 3 year

The opportunity cost alone of being able to trade stocks on 3G has already paid off my iPhone. Not to mention all the devices I'll never have to buy again

I was just looking for a list like this, awesome!

The GroceryDeals is kind of weak for Manitoba (so is the groceryalerts.ca web site), only shows deals for Sobeys. What about other major grocery stores like Superstore, IGA, Safeway, Costco? Good idea, though.

A very handy post -- thanks for the heads up.

I use Yelp (helps locate good food for cheap (and other stuff)) and Trapster (saves me money by helping avoid traffic tickets hahah).

The iPhone/Touch are great but I also wanted to warn people about about a bit of an issue with using Apple Gift Cards in the iTunes store in Canada. The issue is that you can not use gift cards to purchase apps (!).

I created a Get Satisfaction page regarding this (http://getsatisfaction.com/apple/topics/why_doesnt_itunes_gift_card_apply_to_my_app_store_purchases_in_canada)

After creating the page, I also found this Canadian blog that has been following this issue with intelligent discussion on the topic since Jan 2009. (http://enkerli.wordpress.com/2009/01/12/apps-and-itunes-cards-in-canada-follow-up/)

Helpful info on an issue that Apple has kind of swept under the carpet and hopes goes away.

I would be interested in finding out if anyone is using any of the money management apps for iphone. 'GOSO' Get Out and Stay Out (of debt) seemed like an excellent program but now is only available as a 'business opportunity'. I am quite impressed by ibearmoney, paid or free would be fine with me as long as they are versitile. Any info would be appreciated.

Bug Cajun Man,

You are correct most of these work on the iTouch. That is what my wife has. Poor me does not even have a phone!

Ray,

Do those apps work in Canada?

The plans are expensive and I can't justify that cost. I am going to be showing in the future how my home phone bill with long distance is less than 10 dollars Canadian a month!

Stay tuned.

Thanks.

The plans are expensive and I can’t justify that cost. I am going to be showing in the future how my home phone bill with long distance is less than 10 dollars Canadian a month!

Stay tuned.

Thanks.

Steve

I use an app called Pandora Box for latest discounted apps. It shows not only new "free" apps but also discounted and now "free" apps. I think it is a must have.

Gary,
I'm surprised you would say that.

While the 3 year contract is unfortunate, as someone always on the go it is nice to not have to pay a monthly home internet bill, or have to worry about a land line bill. When you subtract these $50 off your monthly expenses, the marginal costs of an iPhone aren't that bad.

These do also work on your iPad Touch as well (I think), so you can use them there and save the iPhone monthly fees :-)

I also use an app called "Around Me" it helps me find things that are around me :) ....I can search for a theater, restaurant, Wal-Mart or pretty much anything else....it's free and saves me a lot of time and hassle!

Also use "Fixter" it's an app for movies, lists all the movie theaters around me by distance, shows movie start times and allows me to buy tickets through it.....
