As of June 2, American Express website still shows the 25,000 points and 180$ fee-waiver in the application page. I don’t know if they will honorate it or not and if the information about May 31, 2009 is official.

I wanted to apply for a 2nd card but I was waiting a little bit between the two applications… will see!!!

I’m an avid Aeroplan member and do some lengthy international travel. Despite that, it still can be hard to get a trip with just 25,000 miles anywhere in North America. Factoring in that you still have to pay all of the surcharges and the dream of a ‘free’ flight anywhere in the continent for only 25,000 miles is just that – a dream.

Is using the Amex points to purchase something a potentially better deal? I remember using Airmiles for travel last year – not for a trip directly but redeeming Airmiles for travel vouchers at Marlin Travel. That turned out to be a much better use of my Airmiles than towards a flight or vacation package.

MDJ, when you say that the free flight deadline is May 31, do you mean you had to have spent 1000 on your card by that date or simply have applied and been approved by that date? Thanks!

Adam, others have mentioned canceling the card before the renewal. I don’t believe it will pose a problem.
