Kyle, mutual funds basically act as a basket of stocks. If you were to hold a mutual fund in a TFSA, it can be most likely be reinvested or taken as income depending on the mutual fund company. In addition, all distributions will be tax free.

Ky, some companies will allow this and it’s called DRIP. The companies that do offer DRIP sometimes offer a discount/share to purchase this way.

I’ve done a little research online and have no clue how the stock market works, I did stumble across a site (american) that talked about direct stock purchases from the company to decrease the amount of money your paying a brokerage, can you do this in canada?

Do Non-registered mutual funds work the same as individual stocks? By this I mean, that with the new TFSA coming out, will the dividends paid out by the MF be a form of passive income? Will the dividends paid out be automatically re-invested or can I have it paid out as income? Thanks everyone for all your great posts all over this site!!!

I signed up too with the aim of using the Chapters option but I found that every book I looked at cost less at Amazon so I’m not sure if their 4% ends up doing anything but evening the playing field. Will definitely keep my eye on it though. Thanks!!

Good luck on your interviewing FT. One tip that a recruiter has told me is to never bring keys/coins and put them in your pockets, because you might end up making jiggly noises :-)

You might also think this is a silly tip, but also do not forget to turn off your cellphone..

I have this Manulife one account - and to make one correction if I can - is that the rate is not prime as in Bank of Canada PRIME - it is the manulife base prime - which is a rate that they set themselves and can go up and down depending on the current market . Ie. today Prime rate is 4% but the manulife rate is 4.5%
When signing up for the account and doing the final papers my question and concerns were brought forward when I read the exact words, their legal department assured me that it is based on the Bank of Canada Rate, now 6 months later I find that they were wrong. With loosing tonnes on money in the market by using the loan based investing Smith Manover, I have a call back on my loan and now find out too that the prime rate is not the prime rate, it is an indepentant rate that is set. So I loose again, need some solutions on how to get into a winning situation.

Perfect, timely, I need to know more about how to make my money back and how to act on investment loan call backs that I can’t afford to pay back without cashing in investments.

I do not agree the first answer. The answer is so outdated, becasue the interviewer will think you are so “fake”. The interviewer may even say: this is your strength. Please give me another example of your weakness. If you don’t have a great answre, you screw up.
