Celebrating 6 Years of Million Dollar Journey – Over $3,000 in Prizes!
It is hard to believe but it has already been six years since Million Dollar Journey kicked off! It all started in late 2006, about three years after graduating from University and in the process of turning around our personal finance situation towards building wealth.
It still baffles me how much this site has grown over the years. It all started with a personal online journal to track my finance journey which evolved into the community you see today. A strong and loyal readership who is as passionate about personal finance and investing as I am. Proudly, we have grown to over 18,500 daily subscribers and over 3,100 twitter followers. In addition to that we have received over 13 million hits over the past six years.
As a token of my appreciation, I’d like to again give something back to the readers and the community. This year, I have a sponsor who has generously offered prizes worth over $3,000!
The Giveaways
1. The Successful Investor (TSI) Stock Market Newsletter Package
TSI has generously offered to sponsor the top prize for this years anniversary celebration. What is the prize? Annual subscriptions to the top stock newsletters in Canada! Winners will receive not 1 newsletter, but a package of 4 newsletters for 1 year.
The newsletters include the highly rated The Successful Investor (review), Stock Pickers Digest, Wall Street Forecaster and Canadian Wealth Advisor. The package is worth about $560 and to top it off, TSI is offering 6 packages to giveaway! That’s right, 6 lucky readers will each receive the $500 prize. Many thanks to Pat, Alex and the crew at TSI for sponsoring this prize
Here’s a description of the newsletters:
The Successful Investor: This award-winning conservative investment advisory is for investors interested in high-quality, mostly Canadian stocks that will surge ahead in good markets and hold their own in the face of market declines. It focuses on low-risk stocks with strong profit and growth potential.
Stock Pickers Digest: For those interested in profiting from the aggressive segment of Canadian and U.S. markets, where risk is high, but the potential for profit is much greater. The focus is on faster moving and not as well-established stocks. Tech stocks, small caps and junior mining and oil stocks are just some of the types of investments you’ll read about in Stock Pickers Digest. The newsletter picks aggressive stocks, but at the same time it looks for above-average value, rising sales, good balance sheets and a strong hold on a growing market.
Wall Street Stock Forecaster: This advisory is for investors seeking high-quality U.S. stocks. It will help you build a well-balanced, diversified U.S. stock portfolio that will do well in good markets and bad. The newsletter also gives you a clear, easy-to-read analysis of how economic changes, political decisions and the Federal Reserve affect the markets in general, and your portfolio in particular.
Canadian Wealth Advisor: This conservative newsletter is for Canadians interested in building wealth safely and securely. It covers “safe money” investments: real estate investment trusts (REITs), exchange-traded funds (ETFs), conservative large-capitalization stocks, RRSPs, RRIFs, TFSAs, GICs and tax-advantaged investments. It also examines financial planning, investment bargains (and rip-offs, too) and many other issues related to safely making more money.
2. The Beginner’s Guide to Saving & Investing
This past summer, I announced the release of a book that I contributed to – The Beginners Guide to Saving & Investing. So what is the book about? It’s all about the basics of personal finance and it’s written in an easy to understand manner (about 100 pages in total). What section did I write? I covered one of my favorite topics, that is, dividend investing for beginners. As I believe in the content of this book, I want to get it out there to my readers, so I’m offering 50 e-book copies (value $10.50 each).
To make this interesting, the first 20 eligible comments (see below for guidelines) will receive an e-book and the remaining 30 will be put into the draw.
3. “Like” for Charity
Similar to last year, I’d like to do something for the Kids Make a Wish Foundation. MDJ will donate $1 for every incremental facebook “Like” on the MDJ facebook page by contest closing date.
Simply click the “Like” button at the top of the MDJ facebook page and we’ll donate $1 for every “Like” greater than the today’s 736 (up to a maximum $500 donation).
How to Enter:
To be eligible for the prizes above:
1. New and Existing Money Tips Newsletter Subscribers will be given an entry (you can subscribe here). (+1 entry)
What is the Money Tips Newsletter?
The Money Tips Newsletter is a free email newsletter that I will send out once or twice a month.
The content includes highlighted articles on Million Dollar Journey, exclusive offers for Million Dollar Journey readers, and original content that doesn’t make it to the front page of this blog. Thus far, I have 12 scheduled Newsletters editions that all subscribers will see. The topics range from the basics of investing, the Smith Manoeuvre, to the top credit cards in Canada.
As mentioned above, your privacy is important to us. We will never sell your information to third parties, as well, you can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time.
2. Leave a comment in this post indicating your favourite personal finance topics. (+1 Entry)
The reason I’m asking this is because I’m looking to grow the content on this site and I’d like to hear about the favorite money topics of those who matter most – the readers. Some common topics include, personal money stories, debt reduction, investing strategies, tax tips, money saving ideas, credit card comparisons, retirement or whatever else you can think of.
3. Click “Like” at the top of the Million Dollar Journey facebook page. (+1 Entry)
In addition to donating $1 to the Kids Make a Wish foundation for every facebook “Like” from readers, we’ll give you an extra entry in the draw.
4. Tweet this post but make sure to include @FrugalTrader (+1 Entry) (you can use the button at the bottom or top of this post)
The Giveaway Rules:
Lets go over some of the rules. All contestant entries will be shoved into an electronic hat and drawn at random.
- Only confirmed (new and existing) newsletter subscribers on the date of draw are eligible.
- Only one comment per person and please include a valid email address.
- To be fair to all contestants, each winner can only win once (it is possible to win 1 stock newsletter package and 1 book together).
- Contest will end Sat 5pm EST Dec 22, 2012 and the winners announced shortly after!
Good luck!

Congrats! I’ve been reading since early 2009 when I began my journey turning my finances around. At first, I was mostly interested in discussing debt reduction and money saving ideas. I’m still interested in those topics, but I’ve moved on to developing an interest in investing. As a beginner, I prefer articles that discuss how to get started and those that compare fees. The credit card comparison articles are an old favorite as well. Finally, as I am now a parent, I enjoy articles about saving money on child and family-related expenses.

What I enjoy the most about the site is the different perspective on saving and investment approaches. While my longterm goals are similar with respect to the accumulation of wealth, I often don’t entirely (initially) agree with some posts — from my limited viewpoint. What I find is that in analyzing why I don’t agree, I get a better critical understanding of my own financial values and priorities (and mistakes), and wind up better informed as a result. I’ve discovered that ‘the journey’ is not black and white; it’s shaped by how we perceive and deal with risk. Everybody is different.
So — thanks very much for being relatively open and transparent about your approach. It’s helped me open my eyes to different perspectives.

I like reading about dividend investing. I actually DRiP about 10 Canadian companies. It might be nice to hear more opinions on DRiPs and optional cash purchases. I’d also like to hear more about general strategy and taxes regarding DRiPs.
Also, my mortgage is due for renewal in August 2013, and I’m planning on setting up a Smith Manoeuvre. So that is very appealing to me as well.

Always enjoy reading your blog – congratulations on continuing for 6 years but moreso on your financial accomplishments. You’ve shared many interesting thoughts over the years I’ve been reading – we started ahead of you chronologically but much later in terms of age – but have followed a path very similar to your own.

Great website.
Want to learn more about the smith maneuver. Taking advantage of drips already, but want to go into self directed investing on a small scale to start, but was told need minimum investments when buying stocks rather than drips, how can I start on a small scale in self directed investing? Want to find out how to develop a retirement plan.

The topics I am most interested in are dividend investing, specifically which tax sheltered accounts can be used by Canadians to most efficiently buy and hold domestic and foreign securities. I also enjoy the reviews and updates on the credit card options available to Canadians, especially no fee cash back cards. With a recent addition to the family, details on RESP’s have been required reading for me, and keeping updated on options for HELOC’s as rates and products for Canadians change is also interesting.
