Buy a Costco Membership and Receive a $25 GC.

I was cruising through the “hot deals” forum on Red Flag Deals and came by a great deal for purchasing a Costco membership! If you purchase a Costco membership online (Canada only), they will send you a $25 GIFT CARD along with it! All you have to do is use the coupon code “GSWEB25B” in the indicated field upon checkout (make sure you hit the “apply” button). Note that this deal is for NEW Goldstar memberships only, I don’t think it works for renewals.

I’ve been contemplating renewing my Costco membership since it expired in December 2006, the $55 + tax annual fee always makes me think twice. However, with the $25 gift card promotion, the effective membership cost is $55 + tax (14% in NL) = $62.70 - $25 = $37.70 for both me and my wife (2 cards). They had the same promotion last year, which coincidentally was when I signed up last year. :)

Here’s to another year of buying in bulk and eating lots of samples.

For more details on this deal, check out this thread.

Have a good weekend (eating samples at Costco) and I’ll see you on Monday.

Update July 20, 2008: Apparently there is a new code for July 2008 that will give you the same $25 off your new membership: GSWEB24

Speaking of saving money while shopping, how would you like to get a 4% chapters coupon, or 3.33% off from Canadian Tire, 1.33% from Westjet or 16% off already discounted magazine subscriptions? Check out my Great Canadian Rebates post for more details.

  1. Hey FT!!

Good eye. Costco is a great place to buy propane as well. $13 for a 20 litre. ($24.99 at the corner gas station).

Last year I discontinued my contract with my propane provider in order to save money at Costco. I figure I save around $300 per year.
I have three tanks and I just bring them with me when I am going to pickup my bi-weekly bulk buy at Costco.

Ya never know, I might bang into you there. ;-)

  2. Chris: Costco is definitely by far the cheapest place to buy propane, good call.

    Hi All,

You can shop at Costco if you want without getting a membership. I just buy gift cards. They will let you in without a membership if you have a gift card. Buy enough to last you a few months.

Just so you know, we have done the cash flow for thousands of people and find that groceries for most families cost $400-600/month - except if the shop at Costco. For Costco members, groceries typically cost $200-400/month more than non-Costco shoppers. We think this is because of the non-grocery items you are tempted to buy there.

Most people will save $200/month ($2,500/year) in expenses if they cancel their Costco membership and shop at a regular grocery store.

If you want to buy a certain item there, just buy yourself a gift card before you go in (you can buy them online) and then buy only that item.

Always trying to save you money…

    Ed

If you shop at Costco using a gift card do you pay the 5% premium on your purchase? When you shop Costco in the US I know you can shop w/o a membership if you pay the 5%…not sure if it’s the same in Canada. Would be interested in the gift card policy. If there is no premium on a gift card purchase why buy a membership??

    Hi Eddy,

What code did you use on August 4? Is it GSWEB24? I used it today and it didn’t work for me.

  16. Hi Jay, I used GSWEB24 today and it worked for me. When you get to the checkout, use the code as your “coupon code” and click “apply”. After which, you’ll see the $25 gift card notice in the box next to the “coupon code”.

Is there a CURRENT code that’s valid??? I tried the ones listed and they’ve expired. Also, any info. on the Costco policy when using a Cash Card? Do they give change in cash? What if I go over the Cash Card amount in my purchase (and I don’t have a memebership)?

    Thanks to you all!
