I hope I don't have to do any job hunting since I am nearing retiring retirement age, but you provided excellent tips on making the transition easier. Even though I haven't done it firsthand, the number one advice that I have heard is to” never burn bridges since you don't know when you may have to cross the again.” I loved the format for the resignation letter: nice, sweet and to the point.

I liked this line of your blog: "Jobs like relationships, are sometimes difficult to end" as I have a similar experience some months ago when I switched job.

Emotions can easily come into play when cluing up a working relationship, whether its self-inflicted or being forced out. I think you said it best by ensuring to keep your cool regardless as to what happens.

We live in a small world and how one behaves can have an impact on future employment elsewhere or even meeting future colleagues down the road in other capacities.

Nice post

I'm not sure what branch of the gov't he worked for. I heard the story through my Dad.

It was very weird that the manager kept calling me. I didn't take it as a compliment. It was more manipulative than anything.

Was your uncle an employee of a local government? I work for the feds, and I didn't think that was possible for a government job.

In the federal government, when I change jobs, I leave a "cheat sheet" for any potential replacements. But, usually it takes months before they find a replacement, and my former colleagues have to take on the duties. So a de-brief and a cheat sheet helps out. I still get the occasional phone calls from my former colleagues looking for advice.

On my last day of work I plan to send a goodbye email to everyone in the company, thank them for working with me and leave my LinkedIn and out-of-office email in case people want to stay connected.

Agree - that was very nice of you to stick around and train another person before you left.

It isn't just a bit weird that manager kept calling you, IT IS Extremely weird. Lol maybe he missed you. :)

I'm a bit more hardcore than you. If I was in that situation I would give 2 weeks notice and if they wanted to keep me longer I would be willing to negotiate for a package or bonus to stay.

As far as transitioning or training - I couldn't care less what happens after I leave. If they wanted me to train someone then I'd be happy to do it. If not - doesn't matter to me.

That manager repeatedly calling you at your new job is a bit weird. You must have been pretty good!
